Overview This directory was developed to provide discovery information for anyone looking for publicly accessible repositories that house geological materials in the U.S. and Canada. In addition, this resource is intended to be a tool to facilitate a community of practice. The need for the directory was identified during planning for and follow-up from a drill core repository webinar series in Spring 2020 for public repository curators and staff in the U.S. and Canada hosted by the Minnesota Geological Survey and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. Additional supporting sponsors included the U.S. Geological Survey National Geological and Geophysical Data Preservation Program and the Association of American...

The National Science Foundation Ice Core Facility (NSF-ICF) - formerly the U.S. National Ice Core Laboratory (NICL) - is a facility for storing, curating, and studying meteoric ice cores recovered from glaciated regions of the world. NSF-ICF provides scientists with the capability to conduct examinations and measurements on ice cores, and it preserves the integrity of these ice cores in a long-term repository for current and future investigations.

This ScienceBase community is the archive of ReSciColl (Registry of Scientific Collections), formerly the National Digital Catalog, of the National Geological and Geophysical Data Preservation Program (NGGDPP). The ReSciColl Dashboard housing ReSciColl Map, ReSciColl Inventory, and Collections Management is available at ReSciColl - Registry of Scientific Collections (usgs.gov). ReSciColl includes metadata records describing geological, geophysical and biological collections and data managed by state geological surveys and USGS. These collections include rock samples, thin sections, field notebooks, photographs, maps, datasets, and others. Collections are described using metadata elements identified by the NGGDPP...

The Data Preservation, Informatics, and Laboratories program is part of the Core Science Systems Mission Area in the USGS. It is responsible for the Core Research Center, the National Ice Core Laboratory, several Paleontology Laboratories, and other facilities.
|
This special collection contains all of the NGGDPP collections that have been populated with item-level metadata - metadata about the individual samples and other artifacts from the collections. These collections can all be interacted with as map services and through various other types of query clients.
