This USGS Data Release represents the data used to develop multiple linear regression models for estimating the loads of total nitrogen in small streams. Recursive partitioning and random forest regression were used to assess 85 geospatial, environmental, and watershed variables across 636 small (less than 585 square kilometers) watersheds to determine which variables are fundamentally important to the estimation of annual loads of total nitrogen. These data support the following publication: Kronholm, S.C., Capel, P.D., and Terziotti, Silvia, 2016, Statistically extracted fundamental watershed variables for estimating the loads of total nitrogen in small streams: Environmental Modeling and Assessment, 10 p., http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s10666-016-9525-3.

This U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) data release contains daily-mean streamflow and estimated-daily base flow for 225 streamgages in the Chesapeake Bay watershed ranging from 1913 to 2016 (beginning and end dates may vary). There is a table containing hydrograph-separation results by six methods for 225 sites (Hydrograph_separation_results_for_225_streams_in_the_Chesapeake_Bay_watershed) and a summary table with hydrograph-separation results for each site and method (Hydrograph_separation_summary_for_225_streams_in_the_Chesapeake_Bay_watershed). Quantitative estimates of base flow are necessary to address questions of the vulnerability and response of aquatic ecosystems to natural and human-induced change in environmental...

This U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) data release contains the data used in the USGS Scientific Investigations Report 2018-5053 entitled "An exploratory Bayesian network for estimating the magnitudes and uncertainties of selected water-quality parameters at streamgage 03374100 White River at Hazleton, Indiana, from partially observed data." The four datasets, which contain only ASCII characters in a column-oriented format, are: (1) sel_qw_parm_full_time_series.csv: A comma-delimited file containing an irregular time series of 713 rows of discrete water-quality measurements that start on February 21, 1973 and end on September 14, 2016. (2) baye_network_initialize.cas: This tab-delimited file can be used to initialize...

Reactive nitrogen is transported from the atmosphere to the landscape as wet and dry deposition that contributes to annual nitrogen loads to the Chesapeake Bay. Estimates of atmospheric inorganic nitrogen deposition to the Chesapeake Bay watershed during 1950 to 2050 are presented, and are based on field measurements, model simulations, statistical relations, and surrogate constituents used for estimates. Wet atmospheric nitrogen deposition has generally been quantified from weekly precipitation sample collections, whereas dry atmospheric nitrogen deposition has been simulated by a model at an hourly time step.

This U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) data release contains estimated daily streamflow and base flow for HUC12 in the nontidal areas of the Chesapeake Bay watershed, monthly average streamflow and base flow, flow statistics, MATLAB scripts, and a document that describes how to create similar datasets in other watersheds. Daily streamflow was estimated for all the nontidal parts of the Chesapeake Bay watershed with the program "Unit Flows in Networks of Channels" (UFINCH; Holtschlag, 2016), together with the observations of measured streamflow at gages at the downstream ends of major rivers. The estimated streamflow was aggregated at the HUC12 level and reformatted as an Optimal Hydrograph Separation (OHS) input file...

This USGS data release contains 1-kilometer resolution source-layer rasters used to predict redox conditions and contaminant concentrations in groundwater in the Fox-Wolf-Peshtigo watershed in Wisconsin and Michigan using random forest classification. The model output layers are 1-kilometer resolution rasters of the predicted probability of elevated concentrations of nitrate, iron, and arsenic. This data release supports the following publication: Tesoriero, A.J., Gronberg, J.M., Juckem, P.F., Miller, M.P., and Austin, B.P., 2017, Predicting redox-sensitive contaminant concentrations in groundwater using random forest classification: Water Resources Research, v. 53, https://doi.org/10.1002/2016WR020197.

This U.S. Geological Survey data release contains datasets that combine past data with future projections of nitrogen sources and nitrogen export to the Chesapeake Bay watershed for the years 1950-2050. To help understand the effect of human and environmental changes over this time period, data for nitrogen sources from wastewater, agricultural fertilizer and manure, and atmospheric deposition are combined with datasets of population and land use. These datasets were used in conjunction with a previously calibrated SPAtially Referenced Regression On Watershed attributes (SPARROW) modeling tool to estimate the mean annual loads of total nitrogen to the Chesapeake Bay and nontidal stream reaches in the watershed at...

This U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) data release contains the code, data, executables, and other information necessary to run the application Unit Flows in Networks of Channels (UFINCH). The UFINCH application is a computer code that utilizes the geospatial stream connectivity and catchment geometry described in National Hydrography Dataset Plus value added attributes (NHDPlus Version 2) to simulate unit (15-minute) flows in networks of channels, generally by use of daily flows at the most downstream stream segment in a basin at which a USGS streamgage is located. Preliminary testing indicates that UFINCH may be most applicable for simulating unregulated, non-estuarial, flows in basins as large as 3,000 square miles...

This data set includes nitrate concentration, water temperature, and discharge collected every 15 minutes during Dec. 2011 - Nov. 2013 from the USGS gage at the Potomac River near Wash, DC, Little Falls Pump Sta (01646500). Additional data includes day length from the US Naval Observatory, and photosynthetically active radiation from USDA research station in Beltsville, MD. Data on channel width and velocity based on manual discharge measurements made at the USGS gage at the Potomac River at Point of Rocks, MD (01638500) are included and were applied to calculate diel nitrate loss rates. Several calculations derived from these data are included in the data set. These data support the following publication: Burns,...

This USGS Data Release represents the synthetic and real data from hydrologically diverse streams used to test the performance and limitations of the Two-tracer Ratio-based Mixing Model (TRaMM) which uses high-frequency measures of two tracers (A and B) and streamflow to separate total streamflow into water from slowflow and fastflow sources. The ratio between the concentrations of the two tracers is used to create a time-variable estimate of the concentration of each tracer in the fastflow end-member. Synthetic data from a groundwater dominated stream and an overland flow dominated stream were used to test the sensitivity of the model to various conditions and tracer concentrations. The sensitivity analysis provides...

This USGS data release contains datasets, metadata, and figures associated with estimating nitrate loads and yields from groundwater to streams in the Chesapeake Bay watershed based on land use and geology. There are three shapefiles with associated metadata and figures representing the shapefiles: • Catchments_GWcontribN.shp: NHDPlus catchment estimates of groundwater contribution of nitrate to streams in the Chesapeake Bay watershed • HUC12_GWcontribN.shp: HUC 12 estimates of groundwater contribution of nitrate to streams in the Chesapeake Bay watershed • Sites_GWcontribN.shp: Sites with baseflow measurements for nitrate plus nitrite within the Chesapeake Bay watershed These data support the following publication:...
