Follow the maintenance steps below on a regular basis to keep ShakeCast in good working order (per Loren Turner, Caltrans).

  1. Check for Windows updates
    1. If needed, install the updates on the backup ShakeCast server first.
    2. Reboot.
    3. Test to make sure all services still run.
    4. Run a test event to make sure the messages get sent.
  2. Update the ShakeCast software
    1. Check for updates.
    2. Install and reboot.
    3. Test to make sure all services still run.
    4. Run a test event to make sure the messages get sent.
  3. Check to see if hard drives need defragmenting
  4. Delete past events, keeping only the last 6 months of events
    1. Remote into the ShakeCast server.
    2. Open a command prompt and switch to directory: C:\ShakeCast\sc\bin
    3. Use the command:

      manage_event.pl –delete [eventID] [eventID]

    5. In order to obtain the list of comma-separated event IDs, use the ShakeCast website, and view the “Processed Event” page: 



    6. Copy/paste from the Event ID column and manipulate in Excel.
      1. Only retain the Event ID, not the version part.
      2. Export from Excel as a CSV single line string.
      3. Use Wordpad to find/replace the commas with spaces.
    7. Paste the list of events into the command line and press return to execute.
