The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) BioData system provides access to aquatic community and physical habitat data collected by USGS scientists from stream ecosystems across the nation. Fish, macroinvertebrate, and algae samples are analyzed and physical habitat surveys are conducted as part of its USGS to provide aquatic bioassessment data to the nation. Users may access data from over 15,000 fish, aquatic macroinvertebrate, and algae collections and over 5000 physical data sets, such as reach habitat and light availability. Data were collected and processed since 1991 using the protocols of the National Water-Quality Assessment program (NAWQA). As of 2010, data collected by USGS scientists using the protocols of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency National Rivers and Streams Assessment program (NRSA) are also included.
