Example Lab Order Files

Example Lab Orders from single site for single project. There are two lab orders and each lab order has two containers.

  • Zip files contains three lab order files:USGS_BioData_Lab_Orders_20120123_1110.zip
    • USGS_BioData_Lab_Orders_20120123_1110.txt - Two lab orders
    • USGS_BioData_Lab_Orders_Containers_20120123_1110.txt - Four containers. One Main body and one field large/rare for each of two lab orders
    • USGS_BioData_Lab_Orders_Site_20120123_1110.txt - One site. 01472157 French Creek near Phoenixville, PA

The Lab Orders File (Return to Top)

File Name: - USGS_BioData_Lab_Orders_yyyymmdd_tttt

The Lab Order file contains a list of all of the lab orders selected for downloading.

Note

The LabOrderID must be included in the result data file that is uploaded to BioData when data are released. LabOrderID links the lab order (and field sample) to the result data uploaded by the lab.

Warning

If you import the Lab Order file into Excel the SiteNumber must be imported as text to preserve leading zero's

Description For Lab

LabOrderID

BioData System-generated Integer assigned as an identifier for a Lab Order. A Lab Order is comprised of the one or more containers that are processed according to requested procedures.

SIDNO

Sample ID Number (SIDNO) is a unique and immutable sample identifier that is automatically created by the system. A prefix of BDB designates BioData as the source of the identifier.

ProjectID

System-generated, unique, immutable, non-editable code that uniquely identifies a project within the BioData system

ProjectLabel

ProjectLabel is a short, unique name associated with and identifying a specific BioData Project. The BioData Project is the atomic unit to handle data permissions, allow access to samples, assist in enforcement of business rules, and for documentation, management and monitoring of data collection activities. All Field Samples, Study Reaches, and Lab Orders in BioData belong to a Project.

ProjectName

Long name associated with and identifying a specific BioData Project. The BioData Project is the atomic unit to handle data permissions, allow access to samples, assist in enforcement of business rules, and for documentation, management and monitoring of data collection activities. All Field Samples, Study Reaches, and Lab Orders in BioData belong to a Project

Program

National, regional, or local program for which these data are collected. This field may be blank if no program applies

SiteNumber*

USGS National Water Information System (NWIS) 8 to 15-digit  identifier for the place for where sample was collected
*SiteNumber may have leading zeros that Microsoft applications (e.g. Excel) may remove, it should be imported as a text field

SiteName

USGS National Water Information System (NWIS) name for the place where sample was collected

StudyReach

Length of stream selected for sampling purposes. Unique in BioData by Project and Site

CollectionStartDate

Date and time at which the sample was collected; format is mm/dd/yyyy hh:mm:ss; hh uses 24-hour clock.

ProjectAssignedSampleLabel

A unique label or code assigned to the Sample by the Project (unique within a Project); maximum length is 20 characters.

PlacedDate

Date and time at which the lab order was placed in the BioData system; format is mm/dd/yyyy hh:mm:ss; hh uses 24-hour clock.

LastModifiedDate

Date and time (mm/dd/yyyy hh:mm:ss ) at which a field in the lab order was last modified in the BioData system format is mm/dd/yyyy hh:mm:ss; hh uses 24-hour clock.

LabAnalysisProcedure

Name of the processing methods requested for the lab order.

SampleType

BioData short name for the Field Sample collection and field processing methods. The BioData Sample Type also references the biological community sampled and the published protocols.

ScienceCenter

USGS entity that has principal responsibility for managing and executing the project to which this lab order belongs.

NumberOfContainers

The number of discrete portions of a field sample (physical containers) that are part of this lab order.

The Containers File (Return to Top)

File Name: USGS_BioData_Containers_yyyymmdd_tttt

The container file is a list of all of the containers needed to satisfy the analyses requested in the lab order file.

Warning

If you import the Containers file into Excel the SplitRatio must be imported as text

LabOrderID

BioData System-generated integer assigned as an identifier for a Lab Order. A Lab Order is comprised of the one or more containers that are processed according to requested procedures.

ContainerID

BioData System-generated integer assigned as an identifier for a sample Container.

Component

A subset of an invertebrate sample that is produced during processing in the field. Field processing for invertebrates can produce up to three different sample components: main, field large/rare, QASplit

Bottle

Character (A, B, C, etc...) that uniquely identify the container (includes bottles, filters, etc) within a Field Sample.

SplitRatio*

Fraction indicating of the percentage of the Field Sample represented by the material in the container. This value is less than one when the material was divided equally in the field (1/2, 1/4, 1/8, ...), typically to reduce volume. Note that a Main Component with a SplitRatio of 1/1 may be held in more than one container
*Microsoft applications (e.g. Excel) may interpret SplitRatio as a date, so ensure that it is imported as text

Preservative

Solution (such as ethanol, formalin) added to preserve the sample material.

Comments

Notes about the container and the material within.

The Site File (Return to Top)

File Name: USGS_BioData_Site_yyyymmdd_tttt
