2010 GIS and The National Map Conference - Data Integration Track

Initial coordinators:  Mike Mulligan, Tim Mancuso, and Jennifer Sieverling

"Data Integration - combining data residing in different sources and providing users with a unified view of these data."
Thoughts are drifting towards presenting outcomes/demos of 3 CDI goals and future directions (as you know much of the data is geospatial and national map data).

General Abstract

Jennifer Sieverling suggested "Another option would be a general abstract describing a Data Integration Development Project deliverable session and requesting the appropriate length of time to accommodate all presentations - perhaps one or two sessions. Two sessions is a half a day.  A combination of the general description along with individual abstracts would work."  As a result, the following was drafted for comment and then submission on January 31, 2011.

Title:  FY 2010 Data Integration Development Project Deliverables - Tools for USGS Scientists

Abstract:  In Fiscal Year 2010, the United States Geological Survey's Community for Data Integration (CDI) sponsored a project to develop a suite of tools and web services considered to be of high value to USGS scientists who need to find, get, and use USGS data for integrated science.  The project objectives were divided into three goals:  1) ArcGIS Access to Corporate Databases; 2) Framework for Loosely Coupling Models; and 3) Data Upload, Registry, and Access Tool.  The CDI was able to match seed funding with additional funding from partners able to produce the proposed tools and services.  The resulting deliverables will be demonstrated in a half-day session.  Participant feedback, identification of additional pilot test users, and strategies for future development will be discussed. 

NWIS Web Services Snapshot Tool for ArcGIS

Title:  NWIS Web Services Snapshot Tool for ArcGIS:  A Hands-On Workshop to Retrieve NWIS Data in a Local-Scale Study Area

Abstract:  The 2010 NWIS Web Services Snapshot Tool for ArcGIS represents the next generation of data retrieval and management by enabling rapid access to U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) National Water Information System (NWIS) data. A “Snapshot” is a geodatabase composed of a subset of NWIS data. The Snapshot tool is geared to address the needs new or infrequent NWIS users by translating the numerous codes associated with output files of NWIS data into plain English. The Snapshot Tool also enables efficient data retrieval and management, which is fundamental to achieving the USGS Science Strategy vision of undertaking comprehensive and integrated studies that examine the Earth as a system in which the biosphere, hydrosphere, lithosphere, and atmosphere are interrelated.

Participants in this hands-on workshop will: (1) Retrieve NWIS water quality and streamflow data from web services and compile this data in a personal geodatabase; (2) query water quality data within the geodatabase using Structured Query Language (SQL); (3) import external data such as field study results from an Excel spreadsheet into the geodatabase; and (4) export data for use in analytical software packages such as AquaChem.

ScienceBase Data Repository and Catalog

Title:  ScienceBase Data Repository and Catalog:  Supporting Geospatial Data Management

Abstract:  The USGS Community for Data Integration (CDI) worked throughout FY2010 to make data products more accessible to USGS scientists, partner agencies, and the public, sponsoring the Data Integration Development Project to support this enhanced access. As part of this effort, CDI partners developed the ScienceBase Data Repository and Catalog. This application provides a collection point and archive for USGS data products, as well as a discovery and distribution portal for these products.

The focus of the ScienceBase Data Repository and Catalog is geospatial data. A number of systems allow users to store and distribute their documents and file-based products. ScienceBase looks to provide much more than just a file store, allowing scientists to upload or register their spatially-referenced datasets, and then access a wizard to generate basic metadata. The system supports a variety of data formats, including shapefiles, geotiffs, geodatabases, and model components (inputs, outputs, and code), and automatically generates web services, maps, charts, graphs, and a number of other data visualizations based on the type of data ingested. The system also allows the user to control access to, and define a release workflow for, these data. This includes support for the USGS Fundamental Science Practices review procedure, encapsulated in a relatively simple Web user interface.

But geospatial data management goes well beyond a single systems approach. This work would be just one part of the DataONE effort to develop data management tools for principle investigators. The DataONE work attempts to get researchers to consider data management at the inception of their work, and not at the end of the project. The ScienceBase Data Repository and Catalog would make several aspects of geospatial data management less onerous to the scientist, and be one of the options that the DataONE effort could provide to users.

The presentation will include real-life examples of system use as a data management support tool, focusing on the USGS MultiHazards, Great Northern Landscape Conservation Cooperative, and USGS Powell Center use cases.
