In December we had three CDI Working Groups hold calls on one day - read the latest below.

On December 8, 2016, you could have attended a CDI Working Group marathon (triathlon?) with Connected Devices, Semantic Web, and Tech Stack Working Groups holding their calls one after another.

Connected Devices WG

From the CDWG Meeting Notes page:

  1. Chad Fanguy from from the USGS Wetland and Aquatic Research Center discussed the just-approved Nonindigenous Aquatic Species Mobile Data Collector (See "NAS Sighting" at Mobile App List).
  2. Discussion on the Department of the Interior's just released Department Mobile Privacy Policy.
  3. Some CDI members suggested we rethink and consolidate the several Mobile App Development Checklists we are working from in light of this Department Policy and the new USGS Software Release Instructional Memo.

Also, the CDI Wiki page Mobile Applications at US Gological Survey was updated. See more info on

Semantic Web WG

From the SWWG Meetings page:

ITIS, the Integrated Taxonomic Information System, provides a web interface and web services for a database of authoritative taxonomic information on plants, animals, fungi, and microbes of North America and the world. How do they handle vocabulary governance? David Mitchell of USGS and the Smithsonian Institution gave a presentation and discussion.

Services and features discussed at the meeting:

Tech Stack WG

The recording from Sam Matthews' (Mapbox) talk on Vector Tile Maps is posted on the Tech Dive Webinar Series page.

Data Management WG

The Data Management WG held a follow-up to the October CDI Monthly Meeting topic of Open Source Metadata Tools: Standards, Translator, Editor.

Josh Bradley of the US Fish and Wildlife Service gave a more in-depth demo of the tools on Dec. 12.

Recording, Slides, and Notes are on the DMWG Meeting page.
