How do you best determine their needs for information? How do you develop and deliver information and products they need – and know that they are being used? What are examples where this has been done successfully and what are the elements of success? This panel will include speakers from outside the USGS who will provide examples of how scientists and communities collaborate for solutions to reduce risk from a variety of disruptions.

Each year, there is a competitive risk request for proposals (RFP) open to anyone in the USGS and designed to support projects that advance the USGS Risk Plan. First, this presentation will revisit lessons learned from previous awardees and will be particularly valuable to the FY21 Risk award recipients and to those who are considering submitting a proposal to the FY22 RFP. Remaining time will be used to collectively brainstorm ideas for an FY22 theme to incentivize projects in a particular area of focus.

This knowledge sharing mini-workshop will share tools (including a spectrum of participatory methods), success stories, and troubleshoot common challenges around increasing equitable engagement in risk research design. Our goal is for participants to walk away with concrete ideas and strategies for better engaging partners and collaborators and incorporating equity into their work at multiple levels.
Before the workshop, we strongly recommend that participants take a look at the following workshop proceedings for ideas and examples: Conversing with Pelehonuamea: A workshop combining 1,000+ years of traditional Hawaiian knowledge with 200 years of scientific thought on Kīlauea volcanism (usgs.gov).
