Abstracts

Development of the Nonindigenous Aquatic Species Alert Risk Mapper (ARM)

The Nonindigenous Aquatic Species (NAS) Database and Alert System provides a framework for the rapid dissemination of new aquatic plant and animal invasions as they are incorporated into the NAS Database. The system notifies registered users of new sightings of >1,220 non-native aquatic species as part of national-scale early detection and rapid response systems. The NAS group has developed a new tool, the NAS Alert Risk Mapper (ARM), to characterize waterbodies in the conterminous U.S. and Hawaii at potential risk of invasion from a new nonindigenous species sighting. The maps created by the ARM tool accompanies the NAS Alert emails sent out to stakeholders highlighting the rivers, lakes, or swamps at risk of invasion developed from credible scenarios of a species potential movement within a drainage based on its mobility and drainage barriers (e.g., dams and waterfalls). This presentation will provide an overview of the project and feature some of the challenges the investigators encountered while automating this tool in ArcGIS Pro.

Wesley M. Daniel is fisheries biologist with the USGS Wetland and Aquatic Research Center’s Nonindigenous Aquatic Species (NAS) Program. Dr. Daniel is the co-lead for the NAS program and is the curator of all the invertebrate, herptiles and mollusk records for the database. His research focuses on the development of tools for managers and stakeholders that evaluates habitat suitability and the potential spread of non-native and invasive species. 


Content specifications to enable USGS transition to ISO metadata standard

USGS researchers are discovering the possibility of using the international metadata standards collectively known as ISO 19115. The open-ended nature of ISO benefits with much greater flexibility and vocabulary to describe research products. However, that flexibility means few constraints that can guide authors and ensure standardized, robust documentation across the bureau. This project will provide a proof of concept in how documentation requirements for various USGS products can translate into specifications that in turn can be enabled by a metadata editor user interface, thus guiding an author toward robust and standardized metadata using the ISO international standard.

Department of the Interior Risk and the Community for Data Integration Risk Map

The DOI Risk project will help DOI emergency managers improve their understanding of risks to DOI assets, resources, and lands from various natural and anthropogenic threats.  The CDI Risk Map was developed as a prototype for visualizing this hazard and asset information in a shareable, resusable product. This presentation will cover the types of data synthesized for DOI Risk and the challenges encountered in collecting, preparing, and visualizing over 100 GIS data layers for the nation.  We’ll also provide a demo of the CDI Risk Map and links to access project resources. 

Nate Wood is a research geographer with the USGS Western Geographic Science Center and is co-located at the USGS Oregon Water Science Center in Portland, Oregon. He has conducted research and written extensively on community vulnerability to natural hazards, such as tsunami threats around the Pacific Basin; volcanic hazards in Washington and California; and coastal hazards in Florida and the U.S. West Coast.

Jeanne Jones is a geographer and software developer at the USGS Western Geographic Science Center in Menlo Park, California. She designs and develops software tools to support hazards research goals and applications.

  1. Kevin Gallagher talked about the theme of this year’s CDI workshop: From Big Data to Smart Data - this concerns turning our huge volumes of diverse data into usable, actionable, integratable, or “smart” data.

  5. The Transition to ISO metadata project team will host several activities at the CDI workshop, they are looking for users to test their interface. They are using the previously-funded mdEditor application (ScienceBase page) in their work.

  6. The Department of Interior Risk and CDI Risk Map Team reported many links that are available for Department of Interior users to test out, including data description, codebase, the risk map, GeoServer, and the API. CDI members, log in to view their slides - links are on the last slide.

On NAS Risk Mapper

  1. LeAnn White: How is Wesley's mapper related to the non-indigenous species storm tracker?
  2. Matt Neilson : Additionally, the NAS ARM maps try to model the potential extent of spread from a new, known introduction. The Flood and Storm Tracker maps try to model the potential for new introductions based on the current known species distribution based on hypothetical inter-drainage connections
  3. Susan Buto : Wesley - thanks for leveraging the NHDPlus V2 in your work. The next generation NHDPlus HR is is nearly complete in Beta for CONUS and NGP will be working to build Beta NHDPLUS HR for Alaska in the near future. Timeline for completion of AK is TBD but will be updated on the NHD website as we progress. Also of intersest to your application is the inclusion of contributing areas in Canada and Mexico with the NHDPlus HR that weren't available in the V2 (100K) product.

  5. Matt Neilson : Susan: transboundary areas in Canada and Mexico will be very helpful to our efforts

  6. Susan Buto : Thanks Matt - so you know the current transboundary areas in Mexico are "partial" we have the contributing areas mapped but not all the hydrography so catchments aren't properly represented. We hope to fix that as we refresh the data. Contributing areas we've built along the Canada-US boundary are complete with both contributing area and hydrography. We're moving into the Great Lakes region starting this year.

On Big Data to Smart Data

  1. Governance, standards, and science communities that support the data assets are arguably more important than technology! What are we doing to improve them?
  2. Is there outreach to partners to figure out what data they most need for action? This would help ensure the data we serve would actually be used for decisions.
  3. The 2017 CDI Workshop and OEI workshops on storage, sensors, and AI/ML identified many USGS-wide challenges. How do we prioritize these challenges?
  4. To answer the challenge of moving from Big Data to Smart data, are we prepared to make cultural & policy changes that result in alt. models for data release?

On Risk Map

  1. Sounds like the Risk Map outputs may need to utilize the Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) labels...
    1. This is a possibility and I see they are holding a webinar in April on CUI.  I don't think they're addressing it at the data item yet.  If they have info on embedding the label into electronic information we might be able to use it.  Thanks! (Jeanne Jones)

  4. From Amber Wittner (GMEGSC) : While the domain of the risk project is DOI focused, many offices of DOI bureaus share space/building assets with USDA. for example USFS/BLM or USFS/NPS. Will the analysis move to incorporate adversarial risks associated with external agency colocation?

    2. Amber Wittner (GMEGSC) : sure. my point resides in having been a USFS employee and an office threat originated with USFS, and BLM people shared our office... thx!
