Confluence Retirement

Due to the feedback from stakeholders and our commitment to not adversely impact USGS science activities that Confluence supports, we are extending the migration deadline to January 2023.

In an effort to consolidate USGS hosted Wikis, myUSGS’ Confluence service is targeted for retirement. The official USGS Wiki and collaboration space is now SharePoint. Please migrate existing spaces and content to the SharePoint platform and remove it from Confluence at your earliest convenience. If you need any additional information or have any concerns about this change, please contact myusgs@usgs.gov. Thank you for your prompt attention to this matter.

Citizen Science Policy and Challenges
How do USGS & DOI policy affect our citizen science projects today? What do we need to know to comply to these policies? What are the challenges USGS scientists face when setting up citizen science projects? This session will deal with compelling policy issues and other challenges related to app development, the USGS volunteer program, and management of personally identifiable information (PII).

Engaging the Public in Scientific Research

This session focuses on how and why citizens participate in scientific projects that range from using citizens as passive sensors to citizens as interpreters, data collectors and equal collaborators. What motivates citizens to participate? How can we harness these motivations for our mutual benefit? What are effective techniques to engage, encourage, and retain volunteers? Are rewards effective? If so what kinds of rewards? What different types of organizational structures, protocols, and user materials have proven effective? How can volunteer-dependent projects sustain themselves?

Day 2  - Sept 12

Data collection and management

The life cycle of Citizen Science data begins with an observation, the observation becomes a digital record, and ultimately it is combined with other observations and used for analytics. This session will focus on general principles, best practices, and issues related to planning for, acquiring, quality-assuring, certifying, documenting, managing, and sharing the data submitted by the citizen scientist workforce.

Technology/Tools

This session will provide an overview of tools and infrastructure available to use in support of citizen science projects.  The tools discussed are largely available for any other group or project to adopt and adapt to their local needs.  Leveraging already developed and tested technologies can help to standardize information across many datasets, further enabling data sharing and lessening lag time from project conception to deployment.
