Confluence Retirement

In an effort to consolidate USGS hosted Wikis, myUSGS’ Confluence service is scheduled for retirement on January 27th, 2023. The official USGS Wiki and collaboration space is now SharePoint. Please migrate existing spaces and content to the SharePoint platform and remove it from Confluence at your earliest convenience. FY 2021:

In FY21, the CDI executive sponsors are encouraging proposals that address increased capacity for Integrated Predictive Science related to fire science and coastal resilience and protection.

Examples of relevant projects would be those that

  • advance the capability to link existing data and new data rapidly collected by advanced new sensor technologies;
  • integrate data from across disciplines; 
  • develop and apply methods of co-producing decision analysis capabilities by including decision making practitioners on project teams;
  • integrate models to evaluate post-fire or post-coastal change conditions and highlight effective recovery options. 

FY 2020: 

In FY20, the CDI executive sponsors are encouraging proposals that address one or more of the following themes:

  1. Projects that address one of the major components of the USGS Director’s vision to:
    1. Integrate USGS data into a comprehensive data lake;
    2. Develop, test and apply an integrated predictive science capability (EarthMAP) that incorporates data, interpretations, and knowledge that spans discipline boundaries, geographies, and sectors;
    3. Provide actionable intelligence that can be used via dashboards and applications to enhance situational awareness, provide new operational capabilities, and inform decision making, using technologies such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, and high performance computing.
  2. Tools and methods for promotion of smart and actionable data supporting wildland fire and water prediction, aligned with the EarthMAP (Earth Monitoring, Analyses, and Projections) vision (Jenni et al., 2018)
  3. Producing FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable) data and tools for Integrated Predictive Science Capacity (see the Enabling FAIR Data site)
  4. Reusing or repurposing modular tools such as those that were developed by previous CDI projects, including the CDI Risk Map

FY 2019:

This year, the CDI executive sponsors are encouraging proposals that address one or more of the following themes:

  1. Producing FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable) data and tools for Integrated Predictive Science Capacity (see the Enabling FAIR Data site)

  2. Reusing or repurposing modular tools such as those that were developed by previous CDI projects, including the CDI Risk Map,

  3. Building authoritative national datasets for hazards or assets (integrating data and assessing quality),

  4. Tools and methods for biosurveillance of emerging invasive species and health threats.

FY 2018

Risk assessment and Hazard exposure

Each year, the CDI has accepted statements of interest on any topic that follow the CDI guiding principles, noting that the CDI Executive Sponsors may select proposals that support the current Bureau Priorities. This year is no exception -- at the 2017 CDI Workshop, community members learned about the EarthMap vision, recently developed by the USGS Council of Senior Science Advisors (COSSA). EarthMap is an integrated scientific framework that spans traditional scientific boundaries and disciplines and integrates the full portfolio of USGS science (Jenni et al., 2017). A near-term focus of this vision was further refined in the USGS FY18 Bureau Priorities as a USGS Integrated Predictive Science Capacity that will “deliver powerful new products and services that provide: 1) vulnerability detection and assessment, 2) prediction and forecasting, 3) early warning, and 4) decision support at the scale of decisions.” This year, the CDI Executive Sponsors are encouraging proposals that produce building blocks for an Integrated Predictive Science Capacity in the specific focus area of risk assessment and hazard-exposure.

Examples of risk-related projects include: integration of models and data to forecast invasive species, developing methods for aligning and integrating risk and hazard data from different sources, and technology to improve information delivery and stakeholder feedback in risk and hazard activities.

In addition to the Bureau Priorities and the risk assessment focus, statements of interest that propose activities that address the recommendations from the 2017 CDI Workshop are encouraged.
