Description: A group exploring semantic web technologies as possible methods for USGS data and information projects.

Point Of Contact: Fran Lightsom, flightsom@usgs.gov

Meetings: 2nd Thursday of each month from 2-3pm Eastern.

Introduction

Working Group Goals

The main goal of our working group is to develop knowledge and basic services for using semantic web technologies in USGS.
One of the main functions of this group is to share learning and build on each others' experiences so that we don't all have to struggle separately with ideas or technologies that we might learn to use Semantic Web together. Perhaps sharing Examples for discussion will stimulate this learning.

What is the Semantic Web?

  • In the most basic terms the Semantic Web is the "Web of Data"
  • The Semantic Web provides a common framework that allows data to be shared and reused across application, enterprise, and community boundaries.
  • The Semantic Web is a web that is able to describe things in a way that computers can understand.
  • "a shift in thinking from publishing data in human readable HTML documents to machine readable documents"  www.linkeddatatools.com
