Confluence Retirement

In an effort to consolidate USGS hosted Wikis, myUSGS’ Confluence service is scheduled for retirement on January 27th, 2023. The official USGS Wiki and collaboration space is now SharePoint. Please migrate existing spaces and content to the SharePoint platform and remove it from Confluence at your earliest convenience. If you need any additional information or have any concerns about this change, please contact myusgs@usgs.gov. Thank you for your prompt attention to this matter.

Which of the following recommendations do you think would have the most impact on enabling integrated science? (Data & Data Integration)

RecommendationVotes
Establish expert cross-mission area teams of scientists AND data experts to address specific grand challenges38
Promote use of standards to advance interoperability and usability of data24
Increased training on exposing and using data services19
Be open to new advances in technology while still using what is proven13
Assess need for new or improved foundational datasets (national efforts that inform a good number of Mission Area products)11
More robust registry(ies) of information products (SDC+)10
Increase use of semantic technologies to improve discovery and connectivity9

Which of the following recommendations do you think would have the most impact on enabling integrated science? (Modeling)

RecommendationVotes
Provide shared remote workspace (e.g. cloud) for modelers to help analyze and distribute model results (JupyterHub, THREDDS, ERDDAP, …)37
Develop a enterprise model API / toolkit that takes advantage of standards for model output (enables interoperability)33
Support for Advanced Computing Cooperative24
Git training for modelers15
Create modeling ListServe or Slack channel9

Which of the following recommendations do you think would have the most impact on enabling integrated science? (Computing Capacity - Training/Outreach/Education)

RecommendationVotes
Sharing, Leveraging of Training activities across USGS (i.e. R Workshops / Advanced Computing)46
Develop Advanced Computing Cooperative website – communications, decision tree for services, pilot projects, re-use of models, possible single email – requires dedicated staffing for both coordination and facilitation.31
USGS Computing Scientific Challenge – Prize competition related to Cloud, HTC, HPC driven by executive challenge statements (i.e. USGS Grand Challenges, Internal improvement of my science, ….)21
Partnering with Universities to offer Training Courses (Online and in-person - MOOC) for USGS Scientists (i.e. Advanced Computing, R, etc.) – Offer USGS Data, use of USGS Resources, etc.18

Which of the following recommendations do you think would have the most impact on enabling integrated science? (Science Data Infrastructure)

RecommendationVotes
Incentivization for scientists to employ shared science infrastructure, including more innovative distribution methods, including a standard model or architecture (technology, data base, sensor, lab)36
Establish criteria so foundational data is maintained in such a way so that they can be interoperable24
Executive support for cultural change (including the center director)22
Implementa a TIGER team to look at USGS enterprises systems/architecture and how they can more efficiently integrate/interoperate with the output of establishing integrated systems and support resources14
USGS should establish a community of practice to provide consistency for how we are approaching data collection and movement with standardized processes, new technology, dev/ops, etc13
Extend enterprise data handling and distribution capability to help with transparency requirements, and increase collaboration tools12
Need a more efficient funding mechanism and governance to lessen internal competition and decrease SPipe infrastructure10
