titleNEW MAPPING CHALLENGE: Illinois Schools

Our next Mapping Challenge is also focused on getting data ready in advance of upcoming US Topo revisions. This challenge will be by far our biggest yet: all Schools in Illinois. This includes all of our school feature types: General School, Elementary School, Middle School, High School, Technical / Trade School, and College / University.

Don't forget that you can participate in mapping challenges as a standard editor, a peer reviewer (once the points have been edited), or an advanced editor. As always, make sure you're familiar with what we are collecting for School facilities before participating. Volunteers who participate will be recognized on this page and also tweeted on The National Map Twitter account.

Before starting, you may want to check out some of the common questions and answers posted about Schools on our Q&A page. If you haven't edited Schools yet (or lately), we also recommend you review specifics about editing Schools in the user guide, especially the Resources section, which explains what types of websites are authoritative and what types are not. There are several very informative articles about editing Schools in our May 2017 newsletter, so check that out too.

With over 3,143 points that need to be reviewed, this challenge will probably take a while. We will run the challenge until the end of October.

Good news! The interactive status map should be online sometime next week! That will allow you to more easily find the points that need to be edited. In the meantime, below are two static maps of the status of the points currently, and the locations of the schools by category of school.

titleNEW Illinois Post Office Mapping Challenge!

We know you have been patiently waiting for a new mapping challenge since our new editor came online last August, and the wait is finally over!

For the new challenge we want you to check Post Offices in Illinois in advance of US Topo updates. If possible we need all Post Office points edited and then peer reviewed or checked by an advanced editor by the end of July. Currently there are 694 unedited existing points that need to be checked, 311 points that need to be peer reviewed or verified by an advanced editor, and 315 points that are finished and do not need to be checked again. Participating in a challenge includes verifying or updating the existing points, adding missing points, and removing obsolete points.

Before starting, you may want to check out some of the common questions and answers posted about Post Offices on our Q&A page. If you haven't edited Post Offices yet (or lately), we also recommend you review specifics about editing Post Offices in the user guide, especially the Name and Address Formatting section. titleNEW Mapping Challenge – Kentucky Prison/Correctional Facilities

The new mapping challenge is similar to the challenge before last. We want you to map all prison/correctional facility structures in the state of Kentucky. There were originally no existing prison/correctional facility points in Kentucky, but two have been added by volunteers, and one has been verified by USGS already. However, those are the only two existing points on the map, so the rest will need to be added as new points. This might make things a bit easier, because you can find an authoritative source and go through the list adding each new point. Make sure to check for an existing point first, in case another volunteer has already added it. Also make sure you are familiar with what we are/are not collecting for this structure type before beginning.

We recommend using these sites as authoritative resources:

Federal Bureau of Prisons

Kentucky Department of Corrections

Technically we could call the mapping challenge finished. However, there are seven points that were checked by volunteers, but not “finished,” and two points that need to be peer reviewed or checked by an advanced editor. We are going to give it a couple more days before officially closing this challenge, acknowledging the volunteers who participated, and releasing the next challenge. titleANOTHER UPDATE: Tennessee Law Enforcement Facilities Mapping Challenge

The Tennessee Law Enforcement Mapping Challenge is so close to being finished! For being one of our largest challenges to date, you all have done a terrific job getting these points edited. Of the existing unedited points, there are only 22 left that need to be checked by an editor, which is not much compared to the hundreds of points already edited! We would also love to see the current edited points (green) get peer reviewed or checked by an advanced editor. That means the data will be able to go into The National map sooner. To help wrap up this big mapping challenge, we have created a map showing the points that still need to be checked by a standard editor (red points) and those that need to be peer reviewed (green points). Advanced editors, don't forget, you can edit any and all of the points on the map.

The graphics below explain how to use this new map, which can be found here.

**Please be aware, this is a static map, so the points on this map won't change color until we update the map. Therefore, it is a possibility that a point that appears red on this map will have been edited since the map was posted. You can tell if it has been edited by clicking on the link (as seen below) and looking at the "Edited by:" line. If it says, "OSMCP," that means the point has not been edited.

Click on the images below to enlarge.

Image Modified

When you click on a link the point will open in the editor. You will need to log in if you aren't already. Once you have done that, click "Edit node," as seen below, and select the correct editor for the type of editing you are doing. It will then take you to the editing screen where you can check the point.

Image Modified

Thank in advance to everyone who has worked on this challenge! Your contributions help to improve and insure the accuracy of the data in The National Map!

As always, volunteers who participate in the mapping challenge will be recognized on this page and also tweeted on The National Map Twitter account.

titleUPDATE: Tennessee Law Enforcement Facilities Mapping Challenge

This is one of the bigger challenges we have done, but thanks to you all, over 100 Law Enforcement Facility points have already been updated! As you can see on the map below, this includes some peer reviewed and advanced edited points, which means those are ready to go into The National Map!

However, there are still 261 existing unedited points that need to be checked before this challenge will be complete.

Please help us reach the goal of having all Law Enforcement Facilities in Tennessee updated by editing the red points seen below. If you are a Peer Reviewer please check the green points that have already been edited by another volunteer.

titleNew Mapping Challenge - Tennessee Law Enforcement Facilities!

 New Challenge:

 Image Modified

Tennessee US Topo maps are scheduled to be updated soon, so for the new challenge we are sticking with Tennessee. This time we would like you to help us edit all Law Enforcement points in Tennessee. This includes verifying or updating the existing points, adding missing points, and removing obsolete points. Although a few have been edited, there are 364 existing Law Enforcement points in TN (see map above), so this is a big challenge. Let's get these points updated before the US Topo maps for the state are updated!

Also, don't forget that you can participate in mapping challenges as a standard editor, a peer reviewer (once the points have been edited), or an advanced editor. As always, make sure you're familiar with what we are collecting for Law Enforcement before participating.

Volunteers who contribute in the challenge area will be recognized on this page and also tweeted on The National Map Twitter account (with permission).

Good luck and happy mapping!

The new mapping challenge covers a bigger area than any other we've done and is also quite a bit different. This time around we are asking you to map all prison/correctional facility structures in the entire state of Tennessee.

HOWEVER, there are no existing prison/correctional facility points in Tennessee, so you'll be adding all new points. This might make things a bit easier, because you can find an authoritative source and just go through and add each feature as a new point. titleNEW Mapping Challenge - Oklahoma Panhandle Post Offices

The new mapping challenge is similar to the previous one. Fixing stacked Post Office points in Texas County, Oklahoma through a mapping challenge was so successful that we want volunteers to fix the rest of the Post Offices in the Oklahoma Panhandle counties. Since Texas County is finished, the two remaining Panhandle Counties that need to be edited are Cimarron and Beaver Counties.

In case you didn't participate in the last stacked Post Office Mapping Challenge, here is some background information:

The unedited (red) points in the editor come from several different data sources. Some of the Post Office points do not have exact geographic coordinates, but rather just information about which county they are in. In this situation, all of the Post Office points are stacked on top of each other in roughly the center of the county.

The goal is to check each of these points, and if they still exist, move them to the correct locationSame rules apply: delete the point if the Post Office no longer exists and update attribute information (name, address, city, state, zip) as needed. Also, don't forget to look for any Post Offices missing from the map.

The map below shows the existing Post Offices in Cimarron County and Beaver County, Oklahoma. There is one Post Office in Beaver County that isn't stacked, so don't forget to edit that one too. The names of the existing Post Offices on the map can be seen to the right of the map (Blue highlighted are in Cimarron County, all others are in Beaver County.) Make sure you've read the guidelines on formatting Post Office names before participating in this challenge. As always, the USPS locator tool should be used to research Post Offices.

IMPORTANT: Please move the existing stacked points to the correct location rather than adding a new point in the correct location.

titleThis new mapping challenge is yet again, a new... challenge!

This is a relatively small challenge, but much different than others. The unedited (red) points in the editor come from several different data sources. Some of the Post Office and Cemetery points do not have exact geographic coordinates, but rather just information about which county they are in. In this situation, all of the Post Office and/or Cemetery points are stacked on top of each other in roughly the center of the county.

The goal is to check each of these points, and if they still exist, move them to the correct location. Same rules apply: delete the point if the Post Office no longer exists and update attribute information (name, address, city, state, zip) as needed. Also, don't forget to look for any Post Offices missing from the map.

The map below shows the existing Post Offices in Texas County, Oklahoma. The map on the bottom right shows a very zoomed in view of the points, which shows that they are a stacked group of misplaced Post Offices. The names of the eight existing Post Offices on the map can be seen to the right of the map. Make sure you've read the guidelines on formatting Post Office names before participating in this challenge. As always, the USPS locator tool should be used to research Post Offices.
