The purpose of the Risk Research and Applications Community is to convene like-minded scientists and staff from across USGS to discuss issues relevant to risk research and applications. Monthly meetings will include a mix of presentations, discussions, and announcements about relevant resources, events, and activities. Anyone interested is welcome to attend and ideas for future meetings are always appreciated. The establishment of this Community is part of implementing the 2018 USGS Risk Plan, USGS Science for a Risky World: a USGS Plan for Risk Research and Applications.

Additional Background

The USGS Risk Plan addresses the need to grow USGS risk research and applications across a broad range of hazards to provide actionable information for risk reduction to our partners. Recommendation 4.1 states, “create a community of practice for risk research and applications to create a central, Bureau-wide point of contact for risk research and applications and to identify, connect, and coordinate relevant expertise across the Bureau.” Ultimately, the intent is for this community to be grassroots-driven, with the goal of providing a forum for individuals to build connections across centers, programs, and Mission Areas; to identify needs and opportunities to benefit the community; to generate project ideas; and to share resources and expertise. Connectivity across the community will be accomplished via monthly meetings, an online forum, and a face-to-face meeting.

Monthly meetings are held at 1p ET on the 3rd Thursday of every month.

Please send us your ideas for future meetings! We welcome volunteers, speaker suggestions, and topic suggestions! Use the Forum to share ideas or email us at
