The Port of Long Beach (POLB) is one of the world’s busiest seaports and is a leading gateway for trade between the United States and Asia.  As a landlord port, which leases property to terminals and other tenants for their business operations, POLB is primarily responsible for the maintenance and expansion of port infrastructure (e.g. roads, bridges, and wharfs) and the provision of utilities (e.g. water, sewer, and storm water) to its tenants.  

Due to its significant importance on the economy, POLB has developed a Business Continuity Management Program (BCMP), which focuses on the continuity of critical port infrastructure and utilities despite the challenges associated with both natural and manmade incidents.  POLB is located in an area where two major Southern California faults, the Newport-Inglewood and Palos Verdes, exist.   A major earthquake along either fault can have devastating impacts to tenant operations and the overall economy.  As such, POLB’s BCMP provides direction for the rapid recovery of critical infrastructure and utilities.

In the event of a major earthquake that meets specific criteria, ShakeCast will send an alert via e-mail to direct the on-duty Harbor Patrol Sargent to activate the POLB’s Post-Earthquake Infrastructure Inspections Standard Operating Procedure (Post-Earthquake SOP) and notify a large number of POLB’s business continuity teams (i.e. Incident Management Team and inspection strike teams/task forces).  These teams are responsible for performing rapid inspections and implementing workaround strategies to overcome impacted infrastructure and utilities to ensure that POLB remains open for business.
