Confluence Retirement

In an effort to consolidate USGS hosted Wikis, myUSGS’ Confluence service is scheduled for retirement on January 27th, 2023. The official USGS Wiki and collaboration space is now SharePoint. Please migrate existing spaces and content to the SharePoint platform and remove it from Confluence at your earliest convenience. The CDI Coordinators propose that there be two different types of CDI groups. This distinction follows a model from the ESIP community collaboration areas, where there are less formal and more formal groups.

Working groups vary greatly in their activities and goals, and that is fine. Some are smaller groups focused on knowledge exchange while others have more formal invited external presentations and focused work on a product. We welcome all.

Type 1: Cluster, informal group

These groups need just a name, description of purpose, and a point of contact. We can set up a wiki space and communication tools for you. You might want a mailing list of occasional announcements, a group of people interested in the same topic waiting for an opportunity to flex their expertise, a temporary group to work on a defined product, or a space to collect informational resources.

Requirements and opportunities:

  1. Supply cdi@usgs.gov with Point(s) of Contact and name of group, and a one sentence description of the group

  2. We’ll make you a wiki space - browse other groups to see any features you’d like us to add. (Feel free to copy and paste from their spaces.)

  3. At our monthly meetings you have the opportunity to update the CDI with any announcements, upcoming meetings, etc. (link to template, see examples by scrolling down). We hope you can attend to present it, but if you can’t, you can ask Leslie to present the slide for you. The slide is optional.

Type 2: Working group, more formal group

CDI working groups are the more “traditional” working group, in the sense that often formal presentations are given, meetings may be recorded, and notes are taken. In addition to name, description of purpose, and a point of contact, the group lead is welcome to join the bi-weekly CDI Coordinators calls to advise on events and activities, and we’ll ask for a short write up of your activities for our Annual Report.

Requirements and opportunities:

  1. We have bi-weekly Coordinators calls which you are welcome to, to help guide CDI, let us know if you’d like to be added to the Coordinators list. We appreciate all different viewpoints in these calls, that discuss the RFP, monthly meetings, connections between working groups, and other topics

  2. In October we’ll ask for a write up of your activities in the past FY for our annual report (see examples at this link). This is just a page or two and helps us to keep track of all the good stuff you are doing.

    2. Bison connect email (most of the older pre-2015 groups have this, it is administered through ecomputing, takes a while to get.)

  2. Best practices

    1. Keep notes and/or recordings of meetings (See Data management WG example)

    2. If you have events, help us keep our CDI Calendar up to date by letting us know about the events
