- I get an error when I try to extract the .zip file of Statements of Interest - the path name is too long.
Unzip/extract the files on your Desktop, which is a short path name, then move the files to your desired location. This usually happens on PCs.
- Is there a rule against voting for your own proposal?
No - as a proposer, you are part of the CDI Community and you are able to vote for your own proposal. The same goes for collaborators on a proposal. Although some projects have a lot of collaborators, if they are part of the community and they see merit in the idea, then they should support the proposal.
- Can I save my entry as I work on the RFP Manager site?
Yes, when filling out or editing the form, there is an "Update" button at the bottom. Use it often. When you come back to a saved entry, you will click the "Complete/Edit Registration" button to continue your submission.
- Can I submit more than one Statement of Interest?
No, USGS personnel may be involved in more than one prospective or existing proposal, but may be the lead PI on only one proposal.
- What kind of "in-kind" is required? Does it have to be federal or non-federal or either?
In-kind can be either Federal or non-Federal. It is often USGS personnel salary for their time, but could be other funding outside of CDI.
- Can the CDI RFPs include co-PI's and collaborators from outside the USGS?
Yes, the CDI RFPs can include co-PI's and collaborators from outside the USGS. Our only requirement is that the lead PI be a USGS employee because he/she will be responsible for handling the change of allocation to the external partner.
Where can I view past Statements of Interest or Full Proposals?
These are stored under the "Proposals" section of the Wiki, by year. For example: FY16 Statements of Interest, FY16 Full Proposals
- FY18: I have a lot of references in my CDI SOI (statement of interest) that I am preparing. Do the actual references count towards the 1-page limit?
No, references don't count toward 1-page narrative: Submitters will not be at a disadvantage from having lots of references. That being said, I still suggest you use a minimal format (first author et al., year, source only, and creative formatting to take up less space) so that it does not take up much of the 2nd page. The readers will thank you. The overall length of the SOI should still be very close to 1 page narrative and 1/2 page budget.
Background: in FY17 we had a 2-page limit for the entire SOI, this led to varying lengths of the narrative from 1 page to 1.5 pages, (leaving room for the 0.5 page budget). To avoid this, this year in FY18 we are specifying that the narrative section of the SOI can only be 1 page maximum.
FY18: How would we be able to transfer funding to someone outside of USGS? Would we need to go through USGS or could we give money to the external partner directly for collaboration?
Because we do not have a lot of administrative time for CDI, we transfer the funds internally to one other USGS cost center per award (new in FY18). We hope that you can work with your administrative officer to complete the agreements and transfer money outside of the USGS.
