Exploring NASA’s Earth Science data at

Learn about the plethora of NASA resources available for understanding our Earth. NASA’s Earth Science Data Systems builds and maintains systems that collect, store, and deliver petabytes of multi-disciplinary data. We are currently working to improve the discoverability of its data holdings and information through the website and will share some of our new content.

Cynthia Hall is the Community Coordinator for NASA’s Earth Science Data Systems, where she is working to enhance and promote the use of all of NASA’s Earth science data collections. She works with data users from scientists to educators to decision makers, all with a varied range of needs.

Community for Software & Data Integration

Software isn’t just limited to tech geeks who develop web applications anymore. There's lots of science use cases that are making software development a ubiquitous skill set among the masses. In this presentation we will cover:

Michelle Guy - Computer Scientist architecting solutions across disciplines at the USGS Geologic Hazards Science Center in Golden CO. (more info)
Jeremy Newson - Hydrologist and full stack software architect currently working with the USGS Web Informatics and Mapping team (more info)
Cassandra Ladino - Office of Enterprise Information Applications Manager, 10+ years of experience in project management and application design at USGS. Currently focusing on data architecting in AWS cloud. (more info)

  1. The opening slides have some resources on Usability
  2.  EarthData
    1. NASA has a lot of data that is relevant to our USGS Mission Areas
    2. They developed tools to help users navigate the data holdings
    3. Ever wonder what the NASA data levels 0-4 are? See here.
  3. Software and Data Integration
    1. The presence of software and people who create software (broad definition) is growing in the CDI!
    2. Software is integral to the entire data collection, analysis, and delivery process.
    3. There are many new resources to help us with our software.
      1. Software Management Website
      2. Software Development mailing list - subscribe
      3. MS Teams GS-Software (replaced the Slack software-dev channel since this call)
    4. Two lightning talks
      1. Laura DeCicco - USGS-R teaches people skills for using R, but is also heavily about communication and community
      2. Emily Sturdivant - automate data wrangling and publishing tasks for ScienceBase!
