HDgov (https://my.usgs.gov/hd) is an interactive online portal of interagency, academic, and non-government resources focused on the human dimensions of natural resources. The web portal provides easy access to these resources which help ensure the needs of people are examined and addressed throughout the planning process and project execution in natural resource management. The tools and publications throughout this portal are submitted by and collected from various government agencies, academic institutions, and non-government entities to assemble relevant materials on key natural resource issues in a single location and increase efficient sharing and utilization of research methods and scientific findings. In addition to resources and publications, the portal provides direct access to job posting and grant opportunities available from our partner agencies.
Social and other natural resource scientists need access to current data, tools, and methods being created by other scientists across agencies and institutions. HDgov creates an opportunity to browse across agencies for current topics and projects in specific human dimensions of natural resource areas through a portal which reviews, verifies, and monitors content for scientific merit. Scientists are able to access existing peer-reviewed and grey literature including case studies and methods, as well as content original to HDgov.
HDgov provides land managers with a consolidated human dimensions repository for natural resource policy, current issues and trends, and effective practices being implemented in varying and ever-changing environments. The collection of publications and case studies provide valuable guidance and examples with comparable management environments. Land managers also have direct access to the network of social scientists and administering studies in human dimensions. Land managers can rely on the resources presented through HDgov to have been vetted through a thorough review process.
Students have access to a network of peer scientists working in academic, government, and non-government settings whose expertise can guide new case studies and policy analysis. Information and resources found on HD.gov can be used to guide and deliver new grey literature and publications. Through this portal graduate students can be more involved in human dimensions of natural resource management and perhaps add a few items to their CV at the same time.
Professors and lecturers can find a one-stop shop with HDgov because it is a resource for sharing ideas for course content and innovative teaching ideas. The existing collection of studies may be used for class discussion and report assignments where the “Laws & Policies” may come in useful as well. Content from the “Methods,” “Tools,” and “Data” sections make a great starting point for class projects requiring additional information and resources.
In addition, new content may be submitted to the site in the form of summarized publications with appropriate links, class projects and case-studies, and a broader scope of options for new or existing headings in “Issues & Topics” directly related to human dimensions. The content manager for HDgov is available to work with you organizing your content submissions into the available human dimensions resources.
The team pages are unique, custom places where an organization, agency, work group, or other human dimensions related effort can post content to a secure site. Access to the team page content can be expanded to the greater HDgov user base and general public or limited to just the membership of the partner group.
