ARIES - ARtificial Intelligence for Ecosystem Services
ARIES is a web-based technology offered to users worldwide to assist rapid ecosystem service assessment and valuation (ESAV). Its purpose is to make environmental decisions easier and more effective. ARIES helps discover, understand, and quantify environmental assets and what factors influence their values, in a geographical area and according to needs and priorities set by its users.
ARIES can accommodate a range of different use scenarios, including spatial assessments and economic valuations of ecosystem services, optimization of payment schemes for ecosystem services, and spatial policy planning.
What Is It?
Stakeholder engagement and outreach tool (for participatory goal and priority setting and stakeholder education)
Modeling and analysis tool - Tool to develop models
Visualization tool (for data and scenarios)
Decision support tool
GIS based: GIS operations done on server, no requirements on the user side. Using open source software throughout.
Tool is web based
Tool has a GUI available
Tool does simulations
Tool accounts for and reports uncertainty
Tool handles socio-economic impacts
Visualization capabilities: GIS maps with navigation available online. Data can be exported to common packages.
Analysis is limited by resolution of input data for some ecosystem services whose definitions imply have scale restrictions.
Technical expertise: Basic computer skills sufficient
Scientific expertise: General understanding of issues
Resource Requirements: No resources required to use basic functionalities (data are included, tool is web-based). Detailed analysis may require data input for region of interest if not already available.
Types of Data Needed
Types of data input needed to use tool: Probabilistic and capable of operating in conditions of data scarcity. No data will be required for basic analysis, but user data can be input to improve predictions.
Input formats: AI-driven engine can automatically mediate most common formats.
Types of output data from tool: Provisionshed and benefitshed for individual ecosystem benefits; aggregated maps of value and concordance of objective situation with user priorities.
Output formats:Images, GIS output, table format (CVS/Excel), Google Earth projection on request.
