Summary

This dataset contains a compilation of concentrations of chlorinated volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in groundwater and surface water sampled at the former Naval Air Warfare Center, West Trenton, New Jersey. Measured VOCs include trichloroethene (TCE), cis- 1,2-dichloroethene (cisDCE), and vinyl chloride (VC). Semi-volatile organic compound 1,4-dioxane is also included. Measured PFAS include perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA), perfluorobutane sulfonate (PFBS), perfluorohexane sulfonate (PFHxS), perfluorohexanoic acid (PFHxA), perfluoroheptanoic acid (PFHpA), perfluorodecanoic acid (PFDA), perfluoroundecanoic acid (PFUnA), perfluorododecanoic [...]

Purpose

The U.S. Navy collects concentration data of these constituents for long-term monitoring of groundwater and surface water contamination at the NAWC. Groundwater data are collected on a semiannual to quadrennial basis depending on the well. Surface water data are collected quarterly. Several sites are only sampled sporadically. Samples are collected by U.S. Navy contractors, analyzed by U.S. Navy contract laboratories, and reported to USGS in contractor reports. USGS supports Navy monitoring efforts by evaluating the extent, migration, and temporal changes in contamination at NAWC. Additional groundwater data herein were collected by USGS or other Navy contractors for bioaugmentation studies performed at the site starting in 2005 and 2008 to stimulate microbial reductive dechlorination of the VOC contaminants.
