This dataset represents a species known range extent for Pygmy Rabbit (Brachylagus idahoensis) within the conterminous United States (CONUS) based on 2001 ground conditions. This range map was created by attributing sub-watershed polygons with information of a species' presence, origin, seasonal and reproductive use. See Gap Analysis Project Species Range Maps for more information regarding data creation and user constraints. For species specific range information, see the attached Range data.

On December 5, 2016, Marjorie Matocq, University of Nevada Reno, and John Kasbohm, Greater Sheldon-Hart Mountain National Wildlife Refuge, discussed functional continuity of habitat for the pygmy rabbit.Pygmy rabbits (Brachylagus idahoensis) are habitat specialists of sagebrush communities throughout the Great Basin. Overgrazing, altered fire regimes, invasive plants and energy development are expected to impact natural patterns of dispersal and gene flow among wildlife populations in sagebrush ecosystems, including pygmy rabbits. The objective of this preliminary modeling effort was to prepare a single HexSimPLE model for the Northern Basin Pygmy rabbit population within the geographic extent of the Northwest Basin and Range landscape (Figure 1, https://www.fws.gov/science/catalog range). Population parameters derived from the literature and reviewed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) refuges team were used to populate a simplified individual- based model (IBM) platform to develop a reasonable yet simplistic representation of pygmy rabbit movement, habitat use, and population dynamics in this landscape. We examined patterns of genetic variation and diversity of extant pygmy rabbit (Brachylagus idahoensis) populations across the species’ current range in Nevada and California. Our aims were to determine population genetic structure and levels of diversity across the southern portion of the species’ range. We genotyped 13 microsatellite loci from 194 fecal samples collected across 14 localities. Our Bayesian cluster analyses found 2 genetically distinct groups: 1 in the Mono Basin of California and the other encompassing all remaining Nevada Great Basin populations. Wheat Creek Meadows Wildlife Habitat Area (WCM) is a 1600 acre wildlife habitat area acquired by the BLM through a land exchange in 1988. It lies 15 miles north of Kemmerer, Wyoming on the south end of the Wyoming Range. The property has two perennial streams, Wheat and West Willow Creeks. The main goal for WCM was to provide protection of wildlife habitat and wetlands with special emphasis on maximizing the potential for wildlife species production and diversity. This project will develop a range-wide distribution map for pygmy rabbits through compilation and synthesis of existing presence-absence data and development of a predictive MaxEnt model. The proposed work would evaluate how well sage-grouse habitat conservation also supports landscapes inhabited by pygmy rabbits at both regional and range-wide scales, and this information can be used to inform integrated habitat conservation, restoration, and management that targets both of these sagebrush obligates. It is part of a larger intensive sage-grouse and pygmy rabbit distribution and habitat use study in Idaho supported by BLM, Forest Service and Idaho Department of Fish and Game.
